The district was substantially redrawn after the 2012 redistricting. Republican Lou Barletta has represented the district since 2011, the first Republican to do so in almost 30 years. From 2003 to 2013 it included Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton and most of the Poconos. It was once considered a very safe Democratic seat but has become more competitive in recent years.
